>> looks luke a little puppy dog. glad-- looks like a little puppy dog. glad you're with us. i'm steve chenevey. >> i'm sarah simmons. welcome to fox 5 morning news. let's say hello to gwen tolbart. she is in today with -- well, not food news today but maybe the rest of the week. >> some people love it. it is rain on the way. we had a very, very mild sunny day over the course of the holiday weekend. mother nature says time to switch it up a little bit. satellite-radar composite showing you clouds are everywhere this morning and they are going to continue to move their way across the region and all ahead of a system that is going to bring plenty of rainfall. you can see a lot it was there to the west. throughout the course of the day, the rain will continue to fill in and be fairly widespread. we'll have a little bit of pockets of heavier rainfall at some point. be prepared because it will affect your evening commute. currently, 42 degrees at

national airport. 39 at bwi. overall, the wind s are not too bad. we had gusty winds yesterday. the winds will pick up tonight but for the course of the day, they will stay on the light side. overcast skies. rain. we will see things change and switch back a little bit as we head into the five-day forecast through the end of the weekend. >> thank you. lets acheck in with lauren demarco to get a look at traffic. >> good morning. well being back to the grind for many folks this morning. those that had the long three- day weekend, so we are seeing a little bit more volume on the roads than we have been but no major delays. we had the accident on the beltway in prince george's county. let's take a live look from trafficland as you travel the inner loop. everything running smoothly. wreak was near the good luck road overpass and it has cleared out the way so no role

problems -- for real problems as you head to the win. here we are past georgia avenue head hedding towards the mormon temple. nothing in your way here and i nice trip across the american legion bridge as well. -- no real problems as you head to the woodrow wilson bridge. no problems between wood bridge and springfield. 66, 270 running incident-free at this time. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. new this morning, investigators are calling a house fire in frederick, maryland suspicious. flames were first reported at the home in the 3800 block of sugarloaf parkway around 10:30 last night. firefighters were able to keep it contained to the two garages. so far though, no word on what may have sparked that fire. no one was hurt. the first contest in the 2012 republican nomination is a week away. voters in iowa will meet in the

iowa caucuses next tuesday night. >> the republican white house hopefuls are gearing up for the first big electoral test of the season. sherry ly has more from the newsroom about who is leading in the iowa polls. >> reporter: these caucuses are vie turnout affairs and that what is makes organization so key. and in a multi-candidate field, just 40,000 votes could win it. ron paul is considered a serious threat to win iowa. his devoted following is organized and energized. at just over 22%, paul leads mitt romney with 21% in the real clear politics average ever polls taken before christmas. gingrich has plummeted to 14% in iowa. perry is gaining at 12%. ads resumed after a one-day

christmas break. romney and perry both launched new ones. candidates used commercials, cable, social media and more debates than ever before to campaign this cycle and did far less meet and greets with iowa and new hampshire voters. iowa's 2008 caucus winner had a mailing list of 420,000 evangelicals in iowa. he went town to town recruiting home schoolers an christian youth groups. nothing close to that has happened this time. >> i would probably say that mitt romney will end up winning it today. now, i think, again, ron paul, because of his organization could and that is where mitt is really at a disadvantage. he doesn't have the devotion. if the weather is good, mitt rome romney is in better shape f for the weather is bad, ron paul will win. rick santorum has worked hardest. polls don't show it yet but for several week as gingrich has

fallen and people have neared their final decisions, santorum as gotten new well-timed buzz. still, in the feel of seven, only two seem organized to compete nationwide. only they considered the required 10,000 ballot pet i go to qualify for the virginia primary ballot in march. the rest, gingrich, rick perry, michelle bachmann, and santorum didn't qualify. gingrich vowed a write-in bid only to learn that is probed in his adopted state. still, given the roller coaster race leading up to the caucus, things may still be up for grabs when you consider polls show more than half of iowa caucus goers have yet to make up their minds. needless to say, it will be an interesting week. president obama's approval rating on the rise according to the latest gallup tracking

poll. 47% of americans approve of the president's job performance. other top stories we're following. an emotional plea for witnesses to come forward and help solve a christmas day murder. 23-year-old quinton perry, junior are junior was shot and killed while walking near an oxon hill apartment complex on southview drive around 11:00 a.m. he was on his way from the store after picking up some for his two daughters. >> the last thing i said to him when he left, i said i love you, brother, be safe. >> anybody with information should give prince george's county police a call. a maryland family is hoping surveillance video might help explain what happened to a missing disabled man. 33-year-old mitchell malik smith is blind and hasn't been seen for 11 days. relatives say they dropped him off at union station on december 16th to catch a train heading to birmingham, alabama. but somehow he wound up on a train headed to new orleans.

one witness says amtrak employees helped smith get off in charlotte to wait for a train to birmingham. a charlotte police detective is now investigating a new lead that smith wanted to go back to washington. still ahead, a terrorist group claiming responsibility this morning for last week's deadly attacks around baghdad. and what to expect in the coming year on the jobs front. we'll get an idea from a leading economist. a utah family sure to never forget this christmas. and that is why. a surprise gift. relatively calm though.

investigators could know by today what caused the deadly christmas day house fire in stamford, connecticut. three children and their grandparents were killed during that fire. the fire chief said it and the grandfather tried to save one of these grandchildren. his body was found in a part of roost that was under construction just outside the child's bedroom. fire officials believe he was trying to lead her to safety. there is a claim of responsibility this morning for that series of deadly bombings in iraq that killed 69 people. al-qaeda in iraq now says it

was behind the coordinated blast in baghdad last thursday. in an online statement issued late last night, the islamic state of iraq says the attacks were meant to support sunnis in prison. economists don't expect much change in unemployment numbers next year. according to the associated press survey, economists say unemployment rates will be stuck at a recession level when voters hit the polls in november and even though the economy should pick up in 2012, it will remain vulnerable. a show of support for a maryland man being held in could you be a more on the rally for his freedom coming up. plus, this next story making the rounds on the internet. find out what happened to a family in utah when they came home to find this in their house. normal, right? >> is it me or did it seem like he was lookings in the

this is the video making the round out of utah. pretty cool stuff. a rather shocker of a surprise for a utah family that found a deer up side of their home and that is a nice-sized deer. just moments after putting their kids to bed on christmas eve, the buck fell in through a window and didn't know what to do. but he stayed pretty calm. he wasn't like one. ones kicking and trying to figure out his environment. maybe he's been there before. jump a few times, caused a the bit of damage but for the most part stayed calm like. this the a decision of wildlife resources was called in to coke the deer -- to coax the deer out of house. >> considering laying on that bed. >> what you see something like that, you really do think what

at reagan national, we made it up to 50 degrees. very nice! dulles international, 48 degrees. bw incident marshall, 49 degrees for the high yesterday. we'll do similar temperatures today. big difference between yesterday and today is we'll have rain today. -- bwi marshall, 49 degrees no the high yesterday. 44 in annapolis. 39 in gaithersburg. frederick is at 32 degrees. quantico, 44. fredericksburg, 41 so a cool start to the day but about where we would have expected it to be. i thought it would be colder during the overnight hours. here is a look at the satellite- radar composite. plenty of cloud cover across the region. leading end of that precipitation, i don't think most of this is hitting the ground. frankly, i think the more significant precipitation is off to the south and west. that will work its way in here during the late morning or early afternoon hours and we're expecting this to primarily be an afternoon and evening event. there is enough rainfall anticipated that there is actually a coastal flood advisory that will go into

effect at 3:00 this afternoon until 1:00 tomorrow morning for areas to our east including anne arundel county, places like that. coastal flood advisory starting at 3:00. there is a lot of rain here, a lot of heavy rain. i don't know how much heavy rain we will get but i do think we will get significant rainfall. here is why. take a look at the surface map. andier of low pressure moves right over us and with that area of low pressure, we'll see cloudy conditions continue and we'll see the rainy conditions move in and we'll expect to see our temperatures in the 40s. so the forecast looks like this for today and the next five days. today, clouds, high in the mid- 40s, about 46 degrees. rain develops around noontime, something like that. gusty wind tomorrow, 45 degrees. 45 on thursday. as we head towards the weekend, we are a bit milder with highs in the low 50s. that is a look at what is happening with the weather. now, let's get more on this morning's you are hour traffic from lauren demarco. >> you sound a little bit better this morning? >> i am actually a little worse.

release of a man held in cuba for two years now. they rallied to support the release of alan gross. he is part of a jewish outreach effort to improve internet service for the jewish community. his wife says he has lost 100 pounds and is in severe pain from an illness. the family is calling for his release. >> we've gotten word that the cuban government is releasing 2900 prisoners and alan gross is not one of them. we are standing as christians, as jews and others in solidarity to ask that the cuban government would release alan gross and make alan gross 2901 because we believe that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. >> the group plans to rally every monday at noon until gross is released. someone in our area is $125 million richer but we still don't know who it is. saturday's powerball winner has yet to come forward to collect

his or her fortune. but when they do, they won't be the only one is collecting. the elkton, maryland store owner who sold the winning ticket will get a $25,000 winner and says the winner will not be anonymous for much longer. >> one of my employ years talked to him and he says he has the ticket here and he said i'll be in in about two days to see you. i want everything to settle down a little bit. >> this is the second time a winning powerball ticket has been sold in maryland since the game debuted in the state last year. 25-year-old jamie bell is the voice of tin tin for the new film for steven spielberg. he says it was a role he dreamed about as a child. the actor sat down with our movie reviewer, kevin mccarthy. we'll take a look at that coming up.

although the new movie tin tip use as a ton of special effects, real actors played the roles that were later animated. kevin mccarthy talked to actor jimmy bell about his portrayal of the reporter tintin and how he got over his nervousness of working with spielberg. >> something you have done here brilliantly, you are giving a full human performance and we are seeing this cgi rendered scairk -- character of what

you have done. how important do you think it is for the audience to know that. >> i think it is just important to enjoy the movie, get swept up in a steven spielberg movie. if it moves you and takes you on a ride, we wanted to create a world where the adventure was thick and the stakes were high and with steven spielberg, he is always pushing the envelope of technology. the blend of all those things in such a great character was great. >> when you and andy are on the beat boat together and it blows up and you guys are having fun, what does that look like on set? what are we seeing on set? >> the boat is -- it is kind of like a boat. it is in the shape of a boot but it is not wooden. it doesn't have all of the intricacies of what i real boat has. me and andy are in our suits and helmets with our cameras and stuff and we're in a big

gray room. so there is lots about that that have you to invent. have you to invent how cold it is and a little bit of motion with your body in terms of the swell of water. you kind of have to become your own environment to inform yourself which is the fun part because it is so immersive. you have to create all the time. >> you are on set with someone like steven spielberg. is there more pressure for you as an actor. do you feel like this guy has created some of the greatest films of all time, do i need to step up my game here or do you approach it like every other film. >> you always have to step up your game. you just do. but steven spielberg has had such a special place in my heart since i was a kid enjoying all of those movies that he made. i for a long time didn't think he was real. he was the guy who made dinosaurs live and boys fly on bicycles. i was very like how does he do that? how do you do that? so for me, it was a massive

we are taking a live look over washington, d.c. this morning. it is clearing up at least right now and you can see the capitol dome on your left and the monument on your right. the question is how long will it stay that way. >> nice now. >> our conditions will change through the course of the morning. we'll see more and more clouds build in although it is already mostly cloudy. we'll see rain develop here late morning, early afternoon and it will be a pretty steady rain during the course of the afternoon hours into the evening as well. so definitely some changes on the way. let's take a look at the current conditions being

reported at reagan national airport. right now, we have a temperature of 42 degrees. relative humidity is at 65%. your wind are out of the south at 12 miles per hour. here is a look at the satellite- radar composite. i forgot to bring my clicker with me. thank you. satellite-radar composite, we have the cloudy skies. we do have a little bit of precipitation out to the west. i'm not sure how much of that is hitting the ground but it is working its way here. you can see the steadier rainfall moving across portions of west virginia, southwestern virginia, ohio, places like that. that is what we'll get moving in here later on today. because of that, because we do expect some heavy rain, there is a coastal flood advisory that will go into effect today at 3:00 for anne arundel county and also st. mary's and calvert county, southern baltimore and hartford county. that will remain in effect until 1:00 tomorrow morning because of the wind and the rain that we expect, particularly because of winds. we could see some coastal

huntsman. and as we head into iowa one week left, it looks like the caulk yous may either push one candidate closer to the republican nomination or throw the already turn leapt campaign into further question. >> thank you. a house fire in frederick, maryland. flames were first report at the home in the 300 block of sugarloaf parkway around 10:30 last night. firefighters were able to keep flames contained to the two garages at the home and fortunately, no one was hurt. investigators are calling this fire suspicious. police need help locating three men suspected of holding up at least three prince george's county businesses. they were caught on surveillance video robbing a burger king restaurant on december 5th. police also believe the three held i'm windy's restaurant last month and a family dollar store last week. the prince george's countiy executive of looking at almost everything to raise new revenue and deal with the possible budget shortfall. rushern baker tells the "washington post" he will consider supporting an increase

israeli police are arresting ultraorthodox protesters after a police officer was hurt in protests. some orthodox men in the israeli town are depanning to restrict access by women to certain streets. the arrests come after shocking video showed an 8-year-old american school girl crying because some orthodox men spit on her on her way to school and

really into that. but for some people, they foe really, i don't want to work. -- they go really, i don't want to work. mous is not nice. >> you didn't like that lawn service gift i got you. >> that was wonderful. the less work for me the better. let's take a look at what is going on out there. we've got temperatures across the region that are not bad really. 42degrees here in washington. there are some 30s out there. 39 up in gaithersburg. 34 in frederick. dulles airport is at 40 degrees. off to our east, cambridge is at 37 degrees. salisbury is at 38 degrees and in annapolis, it is 44 degrees right now. here is a look at the satellite- radar composite. plenty of clouds in over us as we speak. the leading edge of precipitation off to the west. we've been looking at a couple of things that say to me that we're going to get this rain in here during the late morning hours but it will move realtively quickly. we'll get rain all day once it gets in here but it will get out of here relatively quickly. we do have some heavy rainfall

off to the west in portions of ohio, kentucky, west virginia, places like that and i do think we'll see some areas of heavy rain here later today. let's take a look at the futurecast. there you go. it is in motion. so by 11:00 this morning, noon, we've got rain overspreading the entire area including some areas of heavy rain. that is what we see with the blue splotches there, some heavier rain. during the evening rush hour, it is beginning to pull out of the region. it will ill stab raining -- will still be raining off to the east and some of that will be heavy rain. it does pull out relatively quickly and we'll have clearing during the nighttime hours. so that is good. forecast for today looks like this. overcast with rain, light wind, 46 degrees for your high today. for tonight, rain ends early. it will be mostly cloudy although gradual clearing during the nighttime hours.

it doesn't appear to be causing too much of a delay. here at robinson terminal, things look pretty good leaving springfield. northbound 59 at the truck scales as you head past dumfries for the right side of the roadway there. we have that accident rohlfing a tractor-trailer. your travel lanes open but under speed. 359 looks good from the beltway up to the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. from deadly tornadoes to wicked winter storms, folks across the country had to deal with a lot in 2011. >> we've had a lot going o we take a look at this year's wild weather story. >> reporter: mother nature hitting the u.s. with plenty of surprises this year from hurricanes to an unexpected nor'easter, the headline in 2011 were filled with stories ever wild weather and natural disasters. a busy peer for firefighters in the west and southwest. triple digit temperatures and dry conditions sparking

thousands of wildfires in texas. the most devastating blaze in the state's history, the backdrop wildfire destroying over 30,000 acres. >> oh, no. >> reporter: a deadly year for tornadoes. dangerous twists are ripping as cro the south back in april reducing thousands of homes to rubble and killing more than 300 people across seven states inform alabama alone, more than 200 people were killed. >> oh! >> reporter: then in may, a powerful ef-5 tornado touching down in joplin, missouri completely destroying the small town and killing about 160 people. in august, hurricane irene slammed states all along the east coast. the storm destroying homes, flooding roads and knocking down power lines. irene also creating a messy situation in maryland. check out ocean city and this
